Individual Oral and Principle Events

In these events, students are given a description of a situation specific to their category that measures skills, knowledge, and attitude in respect to the individual's event. Principle events are open strictly to students in their first year of DECA, while all other events are open to anyone. Students are given 10 minutes to prepare and 10 minutes to present to a judge one on one. These events yield great reward as they allow one to develop stronger skills in problem-solving, thinking on the spot, presentation skills, communication skills and so much more.

Team Oral Events

Team events follow the same idea as individual oral events, however, students compete in teams of two. Students are allowed 30 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to present to their judge/s.

Written and prepared events

DECA’s written events are a unique opportunity for students. They require problem-solving skills and critical thinking. In each category, you will be required to write a paper on a specific topic, such as entrepreneurship, finance or marketing, individually or as a team. You will not showcase your paper at regionals, instead you will present it in Toronto, at Provincials to the judges. At provincials, you or your team, will individually complete a qualifying test, regarding your subject area. For example, the innovation plan paper requires the entrepreneurship test (multiple choice).  This event is great for people who enjoy planning, have great written communication skills, and are confident in presenting a new concept in front of judges.
